We stumbled upon Cafe Wayan when we walked along Monkey Forest Road in Ubud. From the outside, all I could see was a small bakery. My friend brought up that this cafe was mentioned in Eat Pray Love.

As we entered the cafe, it felt like we entered a different place. It was like a cafe in the middle of a forest. There are plenty of seats, but it feels private. You may choose if you’d like a table-and-chair setting, or sit-on-floor setting (or usually referred to as lesehan). We settled for the lesehan style.

Cafe Wayan was officially opened in 1986. The cafe now serves Indonesian food, Thai food, Italian food, steaks, desserts, and even cocktails and wines. On Sunday evening, they serve traditional Balinese buffet. The owners, Ibu Wayan and Pak Ketut (Wayan’s husband), have expanded their business widely.

They have cooking classes, cultural workshops, boutique hotels, spas, sister restaurant Laka Leke near Monkey Forest Temple.

The toilet in Cafe Wayan is nicely decorated and clean. If you need a direction to the toilet, just look at the ground, on which the directions are nicely painted.

We explored the cafe, going deep inside to capture photographs. We were met with a pond with frog statues. There are also some stone arcs which make good background for portraits.

As for the food, two of my friends ordered Nasi Campur and Seafood Termidor, while the rest of us ordered coconuts for share. I made an effort to document the menu, you may find it below. Speaking of price, it was not a budget cafe, it was more of a mid-range budget cafe. I didn’t eat the food, I couldn’t comment on the taste. I think I need to go back there to really eat if I visit Ubud again.
