I Saw That Look
I saw that look on his face
That empty stare in the midst of the bustling workplace
That raised voice when confronted by his clients
He is the leader of a hardworking team. His main task is to be the person who motivates, pushes, supports, leads the team to complete the job on time with minimum mistakes. He’s the person held responsible for the quality of the job. Yet, all he does every day is staring emptily into space, not giving a f*** about what the team is working on. All he does every day is counting down the days until he receives the paycheck, and the days until he can finally retire.
I saw that look on her face
A frown, a heavy sigh, and occasional shouting to her peers
She is one of the key personnel in an important department. Her main tasks include proper planning and execution of the project. The quality of the project depends heavily on her quality of work. She is entrusted with such a monumental job. Yet, all she does every day is complaining about her struggles and doing as minimum as she can. When faced with important issues, she pushes the blame to others, makes excuses that everyone makes mistakes, or plays a victim. Project suffers and all she dreams about every day is an easy life with a good job that pays well.
I saw that look again on another lady’s face.
She’s a bright lady with an exceptional resume. She started her career ten years ago as a newbie. Despite having 10 years experience in her field, she is not even close to being a senior. Something doesn’t add up. A bright person should’ve reached the top of the corporate ladder after 10 years of working. Anyway, she’s a likeable person. She smiles at everyone every day. People love being around her.
But, today, I saw that look on her face behind her contagious smile. Her face said, “I wanted so bad to get out of this job, but I can’t. Not until I have enough money to buy my own place. I wanted so bad not to deal with all these bullies and nonsense. Oh, time, please pass quickly; I can’t wait for my salary to come. Heck, this is just a job, I just want to go home early and do what I love to do. I’m so tired of this soul-crushing job. I long for a life where I can pursue my passion without worrying about finances.”
After seeing that look, I told myself, “I hope you don’t settle for a life you hate. I hope you don’t waste your life at a job that doesn’t give you fulfilment. I hope you don’t let the life passes you by. I hope you don’t keep waiting for the right time to pursue your passion. Because one day you’ll be old. You’ll be dead tired of waiting that you can’t find the momentum to fight for life anymore. I hope your life is filled with excitements, not regrets. I hope your life is filled with love and hopes, not desperations. Lastly, I hope you never lose that courage to follow your heart.”
I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens
Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
(From the song: I Hope You Dance)
PS: If you’re obsessed about the peacock as much as I am, you can find it roaming around Sentosa (Singapore).
